How Zamrud Came to Be
Zamrud was founded in Johor Bahru with a straightforward purpose: to give families access to careful, unhurried legal help when dealing with estates and inheritance. The name — Malay for emerald — was chosen to reflect something lasting and valued, qualities we try to bring to every matter we handle.
Over the years, we have worked alongside families facing the quiet weight of administering a loved one's estate, spouses recording their wishes for the first time, and siblings navigating difficult disagreements over how an inheritance should be divided. Each of these situations is different, and we treat them that way.
Our practice focuses solely on inheritance and estate law. That focus means the people we work with speak to someone who knows this area well — not a general practitioner fitting them in between other matters. We keep our caseload manageable so that each client receives the attention their matter deserves.

Inheritance Law in Malaysia — What Families Should Know
Estate and inheritance law in Malaysia is shaped by several overlapping frameworks — the Distribution Act 1958 for non-Muslims, Faraid rules for Muslim estates, the Probate and Administration Act 1959, and the Small Estates (Distribution) Act 1955 for lower-value properties. Navigating these correctly requires both legal knowledge and the patience to work through administrative processes that can, at times, move slowly.
Probate — the formal process of proving a will and obtaining authority to administer the estate — is handled through the High Court for larger estates and through the Land Administrator for smaller ones. When someone passes without a will, the process of obtaining letters of administration adds another layer of complexity, particularly where multiple beneficiaries are involved or assets are held across different institutions.
Inheritance disputes in Malaysia can arise for several reasons: a will that does not reflect the deceased's true intentions, an estate that has been mismanaged by the administrator, or beneficiaries who hold conflicting views on how assets should be divided. Resolving these matters requires a combination of legal knowledge, negotiation skill, and — where those fail — representation before the court or relevant authority.
